Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. She was a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theatre. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. DuVernay had a mother who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later inspired to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. When she was a student DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the trash of one of members of the jury. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in small production studios right after she graduated from school. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
